The Tuesday Trifecta: Sept 27, 2016

What a night - Trump and Clinton put on quite the show, and the Saints and Falcons put up touchdowns like they were going out of style, en route to a 45-32 Falcons win.

The weekend was definitely crazy.  The NFL was bizzaro world with favorites falling all over the place (Steelers, Cardinals, Panthers), and teams we never thought would be at the top (Eagles, Vikings, Ravens) staking claim as some of the best in the league.

Along with that, this morning, more news came out that Oklahoma is likely not voting for expansion in the Big 12, which completely goes against the narrative that they were in favor of it to begin with

My guess is that once the bunch down in Texas decided they were in favor of adding another team from their state, a team that beat up on OU in Week 1, the Sooners brass decided they were not in favor of this.  As long as it was Memphis and Cincinnati, the administration in Norman knew they could be a leader in the Big 12, but with having to deal with Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, and Texas already, they didn't want another recruiting disadvantage in that state.  Once the state of Texas got behind Houston as a new member, everyone else in the Big 12 decided they're fine with things how they are currently situated, and they'll figure out the next wave of realignment once their TV contacts have expired in 8 years.

Now... on to the Trifecta.

1. Clinton / Trump debate drew a 46.2 overnight rating

To put this in perspective, it was the most watched Presidential debate in history, and was the 20th most watched show on TV ever.  It was only 6% less watched than the most recent Super Bowl.  That's a huge number.

We're looking at north of 80 million people.

The debate was definitely entertaining, until you realize that one of these two people will be leading our country for the next 4 years.

This election is like watching an overhyped football game between two teams most of the country hates.  It'll draw huge ratings, but the majority of people don't want either team to win.

2. LSU will gauge the interest of Saban, Meyer, etc

LSU will guage the interest of Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Jimbo Fisher, and Tom Herman.  Hey, it never hurts to ask.

When I was single, I gauged the interest of Kay Perry and Megan Fox.

Katy Perry
Megan Fox

Like I said, it never hurts to ask.

None of these coaches will take the LSU job.  The way this went down won't sit well with big time coaches.  It's disrespectful the way they let Miles go after the 4th game of the season, and Joe Alleva, the school's AD, is the same coach that had issues arise with the Duke Lacrosse team, when they were accused of rape.  Alleva and the school brass wanted Miles gone and had to figure out a way to get it done, but it does not look good for bigger name candidates that are already happy where they are.

Saban is getting close to retirement, and his entire family (including his mother and children) live in the area around Tuscaloosa.  Stoops has never jumped at other bigger jobs.  Herman has a southern california background and seems to be comfy at Houston.  Meyer is from Ohio and is just getting started in the Big 10.  Fisher is recently divorced and has kids in Tallahassee, so moving to Baton Rouge will drastically cut down on family time.

We'll start working on the B list, but it looks like Art Briles is the favorite in the clubhouse, unless something else comes out of the mess he left at Baylor.

3. Ole Miss and Memphis appear ready for fireworks

Ole Miss is favored by 14 in this game down in Oxford.  Memphis beat Ole Miss in the Liberty Bowl last year 37-24, and that was after sporting the Rebels a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.  Memphis lost Paxton Lynch to the NFL and coach Justin Fuente to Virginia Tech.  The Tigers replaced Fuente with another high-profile offensive coordinator-turned-head-coach (Mike Norvell from Arizona St) and a junior college former-Tennessee QB Riley Ferguson.

That Memphis team was 5-0 and was averaging 47.8 ppg.

This year's Memphis team is 3-0 and is averaging 51.7 ppg.

Ole Miss will be looking forward to this game as a bit of revenge.  And if it was right after the Alabama loss, I would think they'd be more than fired up.  But they beat Georgia to death last weekend, going up 45-0 before giving up 2 garbage touchdowns in the 4th quarter.  They may think they can just handle Memphis because they're supposed to be the better team.

I'm not betting the spread this time.  I'm looking at the over.  They've set the total at 66 points.  Ole Miss is averaging 40 ppg to Memphis's 52.  That's 92 ppg between em.  Now, I don't expect 90 points to be scored, but I think both teams will score a lot.  This over should be toast.  35-31 seems doable, but so does 45-41.
